The Arts Guild of Sonoma will present new works by Barbara Jacobson and Kurt Steger Sept. 4-30 in Gallery II. A reception for the artists is planed for Saturday, Sept. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The two artists awarded this show for the excellence of there work by the juror of last years

" Small Works Competition" at the guild. When they confirmed the up coming show, they relized their styles differ greatly - " miles apart," according to Steger - their work reaches similar conclusions.

Steger a commited artist has been working on the pieces featured in the show for the last year. His free standing wood sculptures are primitive in feeling, though they also display his technical skill in woodworking. Like funeral pyres for old souls, the elements are scorched wooden construction, rocks cradled in sinew, and a suggestion of animal-like skin and hair, imply a bond with the earth that transends the worldly to become something eles.

Steger says he feels complimented if the audience displays some nervousness in responce to to his work, and Jacobson describes his work as "beautiful and abstract," and "there is defenitly a presence there."

The Arts Guild is located at 140 E. Napa St. in the city of Sonoma
